Through a simple choice of words we can change the urban sound environment. 'Encouragements' invites you to gather words of support from self identifying women, and to share them with unknowing audiences in public spaces via a simulated phone call. By making public what is often a private conversation of gender and challenge we can infiltrate the urban environment with these personal and plural experiences, embodying a women’s reciprocal empowerment. Originally performed as an audio intervention by the artist, this work has been written as a score for your enactment.

We are 70% water. Our planet is 70% liquid water coexisting with water in a solid and gaseous state. But in our cities we often lose consciousness of and contact with water. Natural flows are piped, redirected and contaminated. But despite everything, water is essential and is always present, even in the driest places. 'Triple Point' invites you to reconnect, to feel and discover all these waters and their equilibrium point - the triple point where the solid, the liquid and the gaseous coexist. You are invited to bring these waters back to their channels.

Somos 70% agua, nuestro planeta es 70% agua líquida coexistiendo con agua en estado sólido y gaseoso. En nuestras ciudades muchas veces perdemos la conciencia y el contacto con el agua. Los flujos naturales son entubados, re-dirigidos y contaminados. 'Hidden Pieces' explores the relationships between a city’s occupants and its day-to-day objects, and how this relationship can be changed and reframed through a disrupting agent. The work presents three “audio tours”, each relating to a common object in the urban landscape: a bench, a bus stop and a lamp post. Through fictitious narratives the artist reveals these everyday items as artworks in a ‘Citywide Gallery’, each made in response to different social, political and philosophical concerns. These stories transform and give new meaning to each object, while prompting an unravelling of the rest of our urban, including the authoritative voices heard within it.

Obras Escondidas explora as relações construídas entre habitantes de uma cidade e seus objetos do dia-a-dia e como, através de um agente disruptivo, estas relações podem ser alteradas e reformuladas. O trabalho apresenta três “áudio guias”, cada um relativo a um objeto comum da paisagem urbana: um banco, uma parada de ônibus e um poste de luz. Através de uma narrativa ficcional o artista revela estes objetos do dia-a-dia na forma de obras de arte em uma “Cidade Galeria”; cada uma relacionada a diferentes preocupações sociais, políticas e filosóficas. As palavras dão novos significados e transformam cada um dos objetos, ao mesmo tempo provocando uma reformulação do resto do nosso urbano, das vozes autoritárias presentes neste.

Beyond the accident of time

'Beyond the accident of time' honors Isamu Noguchi’s never fully-realized sculpture, 'Bell Tower for Hiroshima', 1950 (partially reconstructed 1986). The original instrument used for the first movement is Noguchi’s 'Bell Image' (1956–57). Noguchi imagined the bells for 'Bell Tower for Hiroshima' coming from all over the world. In this piece the artist interprets the sculpture not as a physical object that would be built in Hiroshima, but as a sonic concept that could be enacted in communities around the world. When performing the score we mark out a new 'bell', we listen and recreate this space for reflection, we honor and remember what the sculpture represents.

Inaudible Cities #2

'Inaudible Cities #2' is an ongoing artistic research project exploring the soundscapes of urban fringes - to create a multi-modal expositions that articulate the diverse facets of the city life from the perspective of its peripheries. Techniques of attentive listening, sensory ethnography, heretic cartography, creative field recording, para-archiving and annotating techniques are employed. This instance of the project invites participants to engage in explorations of their own peripheral and marginal(ized) soundscapes. The suburbs give focus on the marginal, infra-ordinary sonic situations in which mundane elements of natural/cultural realms, infrastructures, and debris become leading actors and storytellers.

Inaudible Cities är en pågående konstnärlig undersökning av de perifera ljudlandskapen och består av en serie korta multimodala expositioner som artikulerar olika aspekter av stadslivet från ett perifert perspektiv. Projektet bygger på olika tekniker för uppmärksam lyssnande, sensorisk etnografi, kartografi, kreativ fält inspelning , para-arkivering och olika annotering tekniker. Med fokus på marginella, infra-vanliga soniska situationer där vardagliga komponenter av naturliga / kulturella områden, infrastrukturer och skräp blir ledande aktörer och berättare, denna utgåva av projektet inbjuder deltagare att delta i liknande utforskningar av perifera och marginella ljudlandskap där de bor.

Coptic Cairo is a neighborhood in Old Cairo that is made from many historical periods. It's a place where you can feel part of Egyptian social history by listening to its ambient sounds. It encompasses the Babylon Fortress, the Coptic Museum, the Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, the Amr Ibn El-As Mosque and many other historical sites. This area was a stronghold for Christianity in Egypt both before and during the Islamic era, as most of its churches were built after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in the 7th century. The artist visits this area several times a year, recording the different layers of sound that express the atmosphere - the architecture, streets, visitors, vendors, coffee shops and religious buildings. The recordings have been made undercover while walking, using a hidden microphone and small equipment, as it’s forbidden to record without permissions which are difficult to obtain. The layers of sound captured include the clothing, body and accessories of the artist. The layers of the past are heard with the layers of the social sonic present. This work invites a site-specific listening in an equivocal historical centre of your urban - where the past is also audible.

القاهرة القبطية هو حي في القاهرة القديمة ، يحتوي علي العديد من علامات العصور التاريخية. إنه مكان يمكنك أن تشعر فيه بأنك جزء من التاريخ الاجتماعي المصري عندما تستمع إلى الأصوات المحيطة به. ويشمل حصن بابل والمتحف القبطي والكنيسة المعلقة وكنيسة القديس جورج اليونانية ومسجد عمرو بن العاص والعديد من المواقع التاريخية الأخرى. كانت هذه المنطقة معقلًا للمسيحية في مصر قبل وأثناء العصر الإسلامي ، حيث تم بناء معظم كنائسها بعد الفتح الإسلامي لمصر في القرن السابع. زارت الفنانه هذه المنطقة عدة مرات في السنة ، وسجلت طبقات الصوت المختلفة التي تعبر عن الأجواء - الهندسة المعمارية والشوارع والزوار والبائعين والمقاهي والمباني الدينية. تم إجراء التسجيلات بطريقه سرية باستخدام ميكروفون مخفي ومعدات صغيرة أثناء المشي ، حيث يُحظر التسجيل بدون أذونات يصعب الحصول عليها. تتضمن طبقات الصوت الملتقطة ملابس الفنانة وأصوات جسمها وملحقاتها. تسمع طبقات الماضي بطبقات الحاضر. يدعو هذا العمل إلى استماع خاص بالموقع في مركز تاريخي مرتكز في مدينتك - حيث يكون الماضي مسموعًا أيضًا.

My Root is the Tree of the Future

'Minha Raiz é Árvore do Futuro', is a track from the album 'Mapas Sonoros - Cajazeiras in LockDown?', which develops experimental concepts in music using Afro-indigenous traditions and the modernity of concrete music, elevating an Afro-futuristic thought and philosophy. Reusing scraps, discarding technologies, recording in the field and computational algorithms, codes for building instruments and children, Vagné intervenes in the environment expressing ancestry and Afrofuturism. This work shares the sonic relationships felt by the artist, of the environment and people, who live in urban spaces such as the Cajazeiras and slums during the COVID-19 isolation. This peripheral neighborhood is located in the city of Salvador – Bahia, and is mostly made up of Afro-descendants. The artist contrasts this present situation of isolation with sound events of crowds, rains, birds, horns, machine noise and silence. The healing processes of the universe.

Minha Raiz é Árvore do Futuro, faixa do novo álbum Mapas Sonoros - Cajazeiras in LockDown?, desenvolve conceitos experimentais na música, usando tradições afro-indígenas e a modernidade da música concreta, elevando um pensamento e filosofia afro-futurista. Reutilizando sucatas, descartes tecnológicos, gravação de campo, algoritmos computacionais, códigos para construção de instrumentos e timbres. O artista intervém no ambiente expressando ancestralidade e afrofuturismo. O trabalho compartilha também as relações sonoras sentidas pelo artista no meio ambiente e pelas pessoas que vivem em espaços urbanos e favelas, durante o isolamento da COVID-19. As gravações foram realizadas no bairro de Cajazeiras localizado na periferia da cidade de Salvador - Bahia, que é formado principalmente por afrodescendentes. O artista contrasta essa situação atual de isolamento com eventos sonoros de multidões, chuvas, pássaros, buzinas, ruído de máquina e silêncio. O processo de cura do universo está em progresso.

Breathing Machinery

Inside and out, air and its movement breathes life into spaces. During the COVID-19 lockdown attention was drawn to critical care air ventilators, instruments for human survival. While the quiet streets drew attention to the omnipresent sound of mechanical air extraction units on buildings, these motors ventilated vacant warehouse and workplaces - respirators for work life, pushing air into our dark spaces. Between necessary refrigeration, comfort and clean air, these ticking metal boxes are a symbol of our societal and environmental frailty, the embedded lungs within the urban fabric. This work invites a global audience to connect with this urban mechanical air, to contribute portrait photographs and onomatopoeic captions to an Instagram collection and publication designed by Work-Form.

Designed for Manchester's financial district 'Spinningfields' during lockdown, this audio score acts as a prompt to create a social planning blueprint for a post COVID-19 city. Contributions are invited via voice note recordings made during site visits to financial districts around the world. This work challenges both the structure of the city and the possibilities within it, exposing sound as a catalyst for critical thought and imagination, using field recordings and a conceptual speculative process that tease out the embodiment of past, present and future. The post-lockdown society is one of transformation. The sounds of our cities are changing, but will how we use the space within them change too?

(not quite) a catalogue of birds

'(not quite) a catalogue of birds' is a performative protocol to sound out and listen to dislocated bird songs - as a way to explore forms of common ground with the non-human inhabitants of the urban. This project takes root in the great tradition of imagining a universe without humans, where animals take over cities as they did during the aftermath of the catastrophe of Fukushima, or during more recent events like the COVID-19 lockdown. This work welcomes these forms of 'non-verbal' communication, inviting group vocalisations of various bird calls - not as attempt at interspecies communication, but an invitation to explore other forms of being, of being together and of habitation.

'RPM hums, viral, choral' is an online live performance directed by Julieanna Preston. It invites participants to listen and tune to electrical motors; to make their life force palpable. During this relational encounter participants absorb, sound, mimic and emulate the motor’s vibrations; to quiver, tremble, shudder, shiver and spasm as a complementary and counter-humming material body. The noise pollution produced by electric motors, an everyday irritant to urban life, is heightened by a deep hush emerging during various levels of pandemic isolation across the globe. Imagine the chorus of our collective effort wafting through latitudinal and longitudinal currents.

Mixing graffiti and voice, both human and bird, with urban lettering - this score merges two journeys, tram and train, across the city of Melbourne in southeastern Australia. The score includes an Acknowledgement of Country that recognises the traditional owners of this part of Melbourne, the Wurundjeri people. This work offers a shared hearing, one that does not exclude or separate based on species or liveness, inner or outer voice. It enables a gentle undoing of the filters of hearing, that can be felt as we ride the train with the artists’ score.

At the Guts of it

'At the Guts of it' is a relational sonic work for voice and echo. Using an instructional graphic score and video, the work prompts vocal responses to urban spaces that have reverberant acoustics - under bridges and inside tunnels. These architectural ‘non’ spaces where sound travels to, whirrs and dissolves, are gently made noisy again. The vocal instructions encourage reverberations of both the site and the body, hearing the human as engine and the body as an architecture - sounding out their togetherness and their distinct separateness throughout the performance. This work instructs a form of vocal communication that pushes at the boundaries of communication norms in urban space; an in-betweenness, reminding us of what else is possible.

Made in airports in Moscow, Tel Aviv and the Faroe Islands
'Locus (Latin for location)' is a series of digital synthesizer patches that self-generate new sonic landscapes indefinitely. Despite being made entirely of electrical signals, these patches create a sonic world that is very much alive, wild and deep, filled with wind, thunder, birds and water. These seemingly natural elements are driven from synthetic and life-less origins, and are consciously perceived as such. Each patch was made from scratch by the artist, while waiting on long layovers in international airports. Formed by these estranged spaces in which waiting is the only task - the artist built her own urban sonic present, in the moment. This work invites you to listen into this generated world, whenever you find yourself waiting.
